The Ski Club dates back to the 1890’s when it was known as the Crested Butte Snowshoe and
Toboggan Club. The activities were at that time mainly social. In the early part of the 1950’s, the
Club reemerged, aiming its efforts primarily at constructing a ski lift for the use of townspeople
and their children. In the early 1960’s, the Crested Butte Ski Area was established, and, with it, ski
racing became the main focus of the Club’s activities. Race team membership grew to a peak in
1976 with almost 80 racers. In 1978, the Club limited the program to High School age and under
children in order to inject more parental participation into the race program and to make it more
beneficial for the younger children growing up in the community.
In 1980 the Ski Club applied for and received its original nonprofit status. Until now, in accordance
with its exemption, the Ski Club has operated to provide educational, instructional and athletic
benefits to its members and provided assistance for underprivileged children to participate in its
alpine ski competition program.
In the 1990’s, the Crested Butte Academy was formed as a boarding school and competition training
program, eventually expanding to include the new disciplines of snowboarding and big mountain
competition, while the Ski Club continued to focus mainly on alpine ski racing. The two groups had
an informal agreement that the Academy would train athletes primarily ages 13 and up, while the
Ski Club would focus on ages 12 and under. Due to financial pressures, the Academy was forced to
close it operations this summer.
In the wake of this closure, the Crested Butte Mountain Resort has developed the Mountain Sports
Team, a quality, comprehensive competitive winter sports training program for athletes of all ages
and competitive disciplines, including summer mountain sports. In an effort to create unity within
the winter sports competition arena, the Ski Club has reorganized its activities to provide support
by way of education and charitable grants to qualified youth with financial need who desire to
participate in the CBMST program and other competitive winter sports athletic programs in the
Gunnison Valley.
The Ski Club is committed to helping any athlete with a passion for mountain sports, regardless of
financial need, to participate in a high-quality competitive winter sports program.
